4’4″ X 6’9″ Very Fine Antique Sarouk Rug, Central Persia, Circa 1915
This very finely woven antique Sarouk rug from central Persia’s Sultanabad province defies easy categorization. It seems to have been woven contemporaneous to late Fereghan Sarouk rugs or early Mahajaran Sarouk rugs; i.e., circa 1910 to 1915. However, it is not a typical example of either type in terms of weave or design.
The wool is of high quality and the design is well articulated. Whoever wove it knew what they were doing; they just did not do it in conventional terms. In that respect, the distinctiveness and quality of the rug probably adds to the appeal and value.
Detached stylized floral forms of various types float on the navy blue field. A navy blue border with ivory guard borders frames the field.
In exceptional general condition and suitable for a high traffic area, given proper care.
