4’2″ x 6’6″ Antique Bakhtiari Rug, South Persia, Circa 1920
This distinctive and colorful Persian village rug was probably woven by a sedentary member of the Bakhtiari tribe in south central Persia, though it has a weave that also resembles some rugs woven in the Melayer region in west Persia’s Hamadan province. The ivory field is decorated with an all-over design of floral forms with a large, yellow flowerhead at the center. If you look closely, the arrangement of the flowers around the central flowerhead form a sort of implied, round medallion. Navy corner spandrels and an abrashed (variegated) brick red border frame the field.
