11.7 x 16.7 Antique Heriz “Serapi” Carpet, Northwest Persia, Circa 1880
Antique Heriz carpets of the type, often referred to colloquially as antique “Serapi” carpets, that feature this sort of archaic design are generally considered to be earlier examples. We would date this carpet to circa 1880. This ivory field contains a navy blue medallion and sparse, rectilinear vines and stylized flowers. Mid blue corner spandrels and a navy blue “Turtle” design border frame the field.
This carpet has thin pile and shows small areas of foundation in many sections of the carpet. It also has a somewhat uneven appearance in the ivory field, part of which might be due to uneven wear or low areas and part of which is the natural variegation (referred to as “abrash”) in the wool.
It has become fashionable in some circles for carpets to show wear, rather than have it cosmetically addressed with “touch-up”. We can perform various types of restoration for the buyer at their request, both structural and cosmetic.
While still a carpet in the more expensive range, this carpet is priced according to the condition and would be considerably more expensive if it were in excellent condition.
