4.1 x 6.4 Antique West Persian Rug, Probably Bibicabad, Circa 1900

Woven either in west Persia’s Hamadan province or possibly further north in Kurdistan province, this antique village rug features a weave characterized by knots with a twist to the yarn. This technique is generally seen in Bibicabad rugs and Enjelas rugs from Hamadan province; Senneh rugs from Kurdistan; or what are sometimes referred to as “Sennehbaf Tabriz” rugs, that is rugs woven in the city of Tabriz in Azerbaijan province but with a Senneh-like structure. Given the thicker pile, we think this rug was probably woven in Bibicabad in Hamadan province but it appears older than the vast majority of examples and is very distinctive in general.

The navy blue field contains a rose color medallion and is decorated with stylized flowers. The ivory corner spandrels and “abrashed” (variegated) sky blue border frame the field well.
