9.4 x 14.6 Antique Bidjar Carpet (Gerus), Kurdistan Province, Northwest Persia, Circa 1890
Antique Bidjar carpets with this style of major border and guard borders are often considered to be the earlier type, dating to the second half of the 19th century. Perhaps most closely associated with the Split Arabesque design group, these carpets have a more archaic and/or more whimsical character that Bidjar carpets woven in the early 20th century. These early Bidjar carpets are often referred to as “Gerus” or “Garrus” Bidjars.
This carpet, with its long and narrow proportions emblematic of early Bidjar carpets and a nod to much earlier “classical period” carpets from the Safavid Dynasty period (circa 1501 to 1722), features a highly distinctive design of small, stylized flowers on an uncommon abrashed (variegated) mid blue field.
The inclusion of a small central medallion, absent the corner spandrels typically seen in medallion design carpets, is another distinctive feature.
