4.6 x 6.7 Antique Sultanabad Rug, Probably Produced By Ziegler & Co., Central Persia, Circa 1890
The Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler & Co. began to produce rugs and room size carpets in central Persia’s Sultanabad province in the early or mid 1880s. While it is difficult if not impossible to attribute specific rugs to Ziegler & Co., the best examples are often know as “Ziegler Sultanabads”. This small example, of uncommon size, features a variegated sky blue field decorated with palmettes or blossoms and other stylized floral forms.
The stylized drawing, general quality and oxidized browns suggest this is an early example, perhaps circa 1890.
