9.9 x 12.2 Antique Heriz Carpet, Northwest Persia, Circa 1910

In terms of age, this carpet falls a decade or so short of where we might apply the colloquialism “Serapi” in describing it. That said, it is more beautiful than a majority of earlier “Serapi” type Heriz carpets and is extraordinary compared to most early 20th century Heriz carpets.

Finely woven, the brick red field is decorated with spaciously arrayed stylized floral forms around a navy, coral and sky blue medallion. Large, sky blue pendants extend vertically from the medallion. The corner spandrels are beautifully drawn and have a magnificent assortment of subtle colors. The navy blue “Turtle border is about as good as they get.
