9.5 x 14.5 Antique Bidjar Carpet, Northwest Persia, Circa 1900

This antique Bidjar carpet was woven in northwest Persia’s Kurdistan province. It features a brick red field that is decorated with an all-over design that appears to have its antecedents in the classical Herati design. A flowerhead appears inside a diamond and palmettes extend vertically from the diamond but, unlike a more conventional Herati design, the four leaves or fish that would typically float on the field are ore clearly leaves and they extend from the diamond motif.

This carpet illustrates why antique Bidjar carpets are renowned for their colors; especially in the navy border which also features camel, coral, aubergine and grass green shades.
