4.8 x 7.4 Fine Antique Persian Halvai Bidjar Rug, Herati Design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1920

A finely woven Bidjar rug from northwest Persia’s Kurdistan province. Rugs of this quality are often referred to as “Halvai” Bidjars. Some examples date to the last quarter of the 19th century and are typically woven on wool foundations. This cotton foundation example was probably woven circa 1920. It has remarkable detailing in the classical Herati design and a great range of colors including the red field, navy medallion and border, a grayish color that is probably natural, undyed wool in the trim around the medallion, and coral, sky blue, ivory, light brown, denim blue, grass green and deep green in the Herati design. The spacing of the motifs in the corner spandrels is very well done. It also has the plain, denim blue band separating the field from the interior guard border. One sees a plain color band like this sometimes in earlier examples. We have generally assumed they came from a particular workshop.

Of excellent quality and in very good to excellent general condition, this rug would be a good choice for a heavy traffic area where a rug of outstanding beauty is still wished for.
