3.6 x 4.9 Antique Mohtasham Kashan Rug, Central Persia, Circa 1900

Antique Mohtasham Kashan rugs generally represent the pinnacle of 19th century Persian rug weaving. Finely woven and elegant, they nonetheless typically retain charm and character. For whatever reason(s), few Mohtasham Kashan rugs is the approximately 3′ x 5′ size, referred to as a “Zaronim” size, were produced. One sees 2′ x 3′ Mohtasham rugs, called “mats” or “Poshtis” ; as well as the approximately 4’6″ x 7′ rugs referred to as “Dozar” size rugs. There are, of course, the zoom size carpets starting around 7′ x 10′. But approximately 3′ x 5′ Mohtasham Kashan rugs are so rare that I believe in 38 years this is the third one we have had.

The coral color field contains a stunning sky blue Quatrefoil medallion and is framed by ivory corner spandrels and a navy blue border.

Both collectible and a solid enough rug to serve as a furnishing rug, this is a piece for someone who appreciates both quality and rarity in rugs as an art form and for decorative purposes.
