10 x 16.3 Antique Karaja “Serapi” Carpet, Heriz District, Northwest Persia, Circa 1895
A classic “open field” carpet, probably woven in the village of Karaja in the Heriz district in northwest Persia’s Azerbaijan province. Carpets of this age and caliber from that area are often referred to colloquially as antique “Serapi carpets”.
The madder red open field is decorated with a variegated deep sky blue medallion with pendants and framed by denim blue corner spandrels with stylized floral decoration and a navy blue border with a leaf and flowerhead format.
